Welcome polymaths !

Ever get the feeling that you seem to don't know what to do with your life because there are just so many things that you want to do ? I know, I've been there, so welcome to the club.

My name is Zigfred Diaz and I am a polymath. After more than 6 years of bloging about almost anything under the sun and having sort of a "blogging identity crisis." I've finally embraced who I am and decided to turn my main blog into some sort of guide for people with so much interest. Feel free to poke around.

A tribute to the Philippine Declaration of Independence (2008)

June 12, 2008 by Zigfred Diaz 2 Comments

Today is a very special day for our country, the Philippines. Today we celebrate our 110th Declaration of Independence (Declared on June 12, 1898) Because of the “Holiday economics” being implemented by President Arroyo, the Independence Holiday (No work, no class) has been moved last Monday, June 9, 2008. However celebrations for Independence Day are still being done today, June 12, 2008. Some protested the transfer of the Independence Holiday, the say that it will cause confusion as to what is the actual date of the Philippine Declaration of Independence. For me personally, I support the President when it comes to imposing Holiday economics. The reason for holiday economics is that it will give more time for workers to have a long vacation since there are those who do not have work on Saturdays and Sundays. If a holiday is moved to a Friday or Monday then workers will have a chance to pack up their luggage and go somewhere else for a vacation (Perhaps visit the place where the … [Read more...]

June 11, 2008 by Zigfred Diaz Leave a Comment

Advance Happy Father’s day to all including my own father, my father-in-law, my grandfathers and all fathers all over the world. In the Philippines we celebrate father’s day on the 3rd Sunday of June just like in the United States and in most countries. So on Sunday, June 15, 2008 we will be celebrating Father’s day. According to Wikipedia, the first modern Father’s day celebration started in the United States on July 5, 1908, at Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Ms. Grace Golden Clayton, is believed to be the first to suggest such service to his pastor in honor of the fathers that died in a deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd is considered as another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father's Day. She is the daughter of war veteran William Jackson Smart. Her … [Read more...]

Understanding what BAYANIHAN means

June 6, 2008 by Zigfred Diaz 3 Comments

Bayanihan is a unique Filipino word whose closes English equivalent is “Team work”. But the word speaks of more than that. It is derived from the word bayan which means “nation, town or community.” The word bayanihan means a “spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular goal.” Originally the word bayanihan originated from the traditions observed in Philippine towns where members of the community help a family move to a new place of residence. In the olden days, the whole community literally carry the whole house to its new location. This is achieved by utilizing bamboo poles to lift the house from the ground. Bayanihan is often depicted in a lot of paintings by National Filipino Artists. It speaks of the Filipino unity and portrays that a particular goal can be achieved if we work together as a united people. Now that houses are made of concrete, rarely can we see an actual Bayanihan displayed in action. They say that we might not move houses anymore but the … [Read more...]

May 23, 2008 by Zigfred Diaz Leave a Comment

In my previous posts entitled “Increasing your online income through counting cards” I talked about how they keyword “counting cards” could be exploited to boosts your traffic and in return boosts your online income. But instead of exploiting the “counting cards” keywords, you want to play your luck at the real blackjack instead so plan your Las Vegas travel and hit the road. Unfortunately you end up loosing a lot of money so you decided that you just couldn’t figure out the counting cards methods used by the MIT blackjack team or that you aren’t just as smart as them so you decided to pack your bags and go home. But wait, before you do, set aside the counting cards mania for a while and get to enjoy Las Vegas. Although “Sin City” is known primarily for it’s debauchery and gambling, there are other sites to see such as several art galleries, museums, riding a Gondola, seeing fountain sculpture comes to life, eating the world’s largest hot dog, strolling over a simulated … [Read more...]

Mother’s day tribute

May 12, 2008 by Zigfred Diaz Leave a Comment

Mother's day is officially Sunday, May 11, 2008. We celebrated it yesterday here in the Philippines. But the celebrations are not yet over since in the United States and in some parts of the globe; they are still celebrating mother's day. (Because of the time difference) However there are some countries that celebrate mother's day on a different date. That's because of the concept of "mother's day" has several origins. According to Wikipedia, it is said that mother's day originated during the ancient times of the Greeks and the Romans. The Greeks held a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods sometime from March 15 to 18. The ancient Romans are said to have some sort of mother's day celebration called "Matronalia" dedicated to Juno. It is this day that mothers were usually given gifts. The origin of mother's day in modern times is said to have been started by Anna Jarvis. Anna Jarvis is the daughter of Ann Jarvis who in 1858, had attempted to improve sanitation … [Read more...]
