Almost a decade ago I wrote an article filed under my “Music” category entitled “Who on earth is Carmina Topacio ?” Carmina at that time was an 18 year old rising youtube star with about 8,000 subscribers in her youtube channel. I ended the article with some sort of a prophecy, that “she will be added to the long list of Filipino stars discovered on the internet.”
The one thing unique about Carmina Topacio is not only does she have a beautiful voice and face but she also plays several musical instruments and does original compositions. Her compositions are beautiful and truly a works of art. She is one of the few original composer and singer that I see that truly pours out herself into her music. As Vincent Van Gogh masterfully expresses himself on the canvass, Carmina Topacio pours out her heart and soul in her music.
She posted several of her compositions and sings songs composed by others as well. But after about less than 10 songs posted, she seemed to be inactive in her music.
I sort of forgot about her. Days ago, I got friend request from a “Carmina Topacio.” I am very much wary of accepting “friends” in Facebook because of security and privacy concerns. I’ve known lots of hackers and scammers who use pictures of beautiful women as profile pictures in order to deceive victims into accepting them as FB friends. So I looked at her profile and tried to find any mutual friends. It seemed hard to vet who this person was as her friends list was set not to show any FB friends. I tried accepting the friend request. I thought, perhaps I might be able to figure out how she knows me. Afterwards, a messaged popped up. Carmina introduced herself and told me that I featured her before in my blog. Now I remembered, this was the Carmina Topacio, one of the few youtube singing sensations whose music I really appreciated!
Carmina told me that she is releasing her first single (original) on July 1, 2020. It’s entitled “By My Side.” The song is centered about love and long-distance relationship. It’s kind of fitting for the situation nowadays considering the lock down that we are in.
I asked Carmina about her seeming absence from making music for several years. She said she got busy with other things. She told me however that music is her passion and that no matter what other things she does she will always go back to it as it is a way for her to express herself. She said she is not looking at it as a career but that she was just doing it all for her love of music. Now that’s passion right there and that I believe will really get her and her music to higher places !
As of the time of this writing, Carmina Topacio’s youtube channel has about 49,600 subscribers despite only having 38 videos (spread throughout almost decade). Views on her videos vary from several thousands to more than 3 million.
