Today is known as crucifixion day or “Good Friday.” Christians today from all over the world, take time to pause, reflect and remember the death of Jesus in the cross. Churches hold services and ministers usually preach on the last seven words of Jesus.
Today, April 1, 2010, Thursday is what we call “Maundy Thursday” or what is also commonly known as “Holy Thursday.” For the next 4 days we celebrate what we know as the “Holy week” otherwise popularly known as the Lent season.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent Season. The Roman Catholic Church celebrates Ash Wednesday by fasting, abstinence from meat, and repentance. It is a day of contemplating one’s transgressions. Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days, more exactly 40 days excluding Sundays before Easter. Usually it is moveable as it depends on the date of Easter. The use of ashes in repentance is a common practice in Bible times. To dust yourself with ashes is a way of expressing sorrow for your sins.
I’ll never forget September 26, 2009 and the week that followed after that. This has been a week of disaster after disaster and the vicious cycle just went on and on. I just couldn’t believe it.
