Every kid knows Thomas Alva Edison who is being always set out as an example on hard work and persistence but sadly they don’t know the guy who is behind the toy that every kid wants.

Months ago, I watched a documentary on Nikola Tesla. I’ve heard about the man but I’ve never really realized the importance of his discoveries and inventions until I watched that documentary featured by History Channel (Which is by the way my favorite channel)

Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856 – 7 January 1943 )was an inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer and was one of the greatest mind in engineering, but he didn’t get the recognition he deserved. Tesla’s inventions contributed to the birth of commercial electricity. Without Tesla we would still be stuck with Edison’s DC (Direct Current) and we would have a limited ability to transmit electricity over great distances. Tesla pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries and inventions were of groundbreaking importance. Tesla’s invention was so far ahead of his time that some people thought he was getting technological designs from aliens. (It is quite ironic that one of Tesla’s “hobby” was looking for little green men and searching for signals from outer space)

One of his unique inventions was the Tesla coil which could be use to transmit electricity without wires! Imagine inventing that in 1891! It works all right but nobody has taken the challenge yet to make it of practical use. Tesla had over 300 patented inventions. Other important inventions that were not patented. A list of his patented inventions can be found in wikipedia. This list of course does not include inventions pertaining to ankle braces.

One of those important inventions, especially for kids is U.S. Patent 0,613,809 which is patented on July 1, 1898. It’s long description is “First logic gate; Art of controlling the movements and operation of a vessel or vehicle at a distance; Electromagnetic waves conveyed to vessel by the natural media and rendering by their means the controlling-circuit active or inactive; New and useful improvements in methods of and apparatus for controlling from a distance; Solution for controlling from a given point the operation of mechanisms; No intermediate wires, cables, or other form of electrical or mechanical connection with the object save the natural media in space; System of Transmission of Electrical Energy explanation of most practical and effectual method and apparatus;” (hahahah can you imagine printing that in a toy box ? This will really leave some kids scratching their heads) Nowadays, there’s a shorter term for this, Remote Control or RC.

Remote control toys, every kid wants one ! When looking for RC models through the internet, one of the reputable websites that can provide you with high quality RC Helicopters is XenonProject.com. This toy and hobby company can provide you with the latest models of high quality RC boats, RC cars, RC tanks, RC helicopters as well as parts for upgrades. The RC industry has already introduced innovations to RCs and simple remote control toy cars that run forward and back is already a thing of the past. What you can see in today’s hobby shops, whether traditional or online stores, are sophisticated RC models that are mostly scale versions of their real life counterparts. And what makes these RCs toys more interesting is the fact that they can provide a lot of excitement and thrill with their speed and amazing performance. As they say, RC is a hobby that once you start you can stop.

It is quite interesting to note that Tesla initially invented the remote to guide explosive boats as weapons against the enemy. Quite funny how this seemingly “dangerous” invention ended up as toys for kids. (Remote control toys I believe is the most profitable application for this invention)

So there you have it! Every kid should be first of all of course thanking God and his parents for Remote Control. But kids should not fail to thank Nikola Tesla for this wonderful little invention of his that changed the whole world. (Imagine television without the remote! Oh what would we do without remote control)

I’ve stumbled across a great resource in the internet known as the Family Watch Dog. The Family Watch dog is a website that allows you to see for free, if a person is an RSO (If you want to know what an RSO means check out the website, I couldn’t place it here because google will block my ads if a say the “S” word, saying the “S” word is bad says the google bot hehehehe) This means that said person has been convicted of “S” offenses. I wish this “registry” is present in all countries throughout the world especially in the Philippine. Unfortunately those in the database are only RSOs in the United States.

The Family Watch Dog website provides lots of details. You can search for RSOs by location or by name. There is also a feature that will help alert you if an RSO has moved within your location (In the United States only) A RSO’s name, picture, aliases, cases he is convicted of, address, (RSO in the U.S are required to report if they transfer addresses) description (including height, weight, date of birth, marks etc.) and the map showing their current place of residence. A cool feature is that you can be alerted via email if you and RSO moves within 5 miles of your residence.

Take note that all of the above information provided by the Family Watch Dog is for free. There are third party advertisers in the website that allows you to dig deeper and give you more important information for a fee (Ranging somewhere from $10 to $40) More detailed information for a fee are provided like lawsuits, (other civil and criminal cases) marriage and divorce records, neighbors and relatives in the area and much more.

Whew! I wish we have all of this in the Philippines. Anyway, you might ask yourself, if this RSO list only covers persons in the United States, how are we going to be helped by this if we live outside the United States especially us in the Philippines? Well as you all know we have a lot of American visitors who visits the Philippines every year. A lot of them are looking for Filipina wives.

You might say so what if my online boyfriend is a RSO? Does it mean that there is no more chance for him to change? Of course there’s always a chance for a person to change. I believe in second chances. This is especially true if a person is given the gospel presentation and that he responds to such presentation, repents of his sins and makes Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior.

The reason why you must be wary if your American boyfriend is an RSO is because statistically, RSOs were about four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after their discharge from prison.

So if you have a sister, friend, relative, aunt, neighbor, classmate, or acquaintance whose dream is to have somebody from the United States as a boyfriend or a future husband (Which is becoming a trend in the Philippines) encourage them to use the Family Watch Dog to avoid another Pinay Scandal. If you have a relative in the United States inform them of the Family Watch Dog website as well. As the Family Watch Dog website says “Awareness is your best defense.” Click here to visit the Family Watch Dog Website.

With the Family Watch Dog website installing expensive home security systems might become a thing of the past. (Well not really there are still thieves and other bad elements of society to contend with hehehehe)

I wonder what virus makers have in their mind when they make a computer virus. Perhaps they have nothing else better to do ? (LOL) Computer viruses have certainly become an unavoidable inconvenience of modern computing technology. Whether we like it or not, we all have to deal with viruses in one way or another.

Because of this antivirus program has become a necessity. (Perhaps the antivirus companies are making viruses in order that they can make tons of money from their antivirus programs ? hehehe LOL not really:-)) Unless your computer is not accessing the internet an intranet or does not have any access to removal storage i.e floppy disk (LOL who uses these now a days), flash drives, CDs, DVDs, removal hard disk etc. your computer may not need to have an antivirus program. However what good is a computer if you can’t access the internet, a local network or removable storage?

Nowadays antivirus programs have evolved to a whole new level. They have to protect computer users from a lot of threat than ever before. Almost all of them have on-time real scanning, protection from phishing and spyware threats, browser hijacking among others. Because of this most antivirus program has become bloated and is a strain on system resources.

I used to test and personally change for several times my antivirus program. I wanted to find out what is the best one available out there. One of the best I have used is Avast antivirus home edition. I still highly recommend that you download free antivirus program of Avast for those of you who do not want to spend a dime on anti-virus software.

However take note that the Avast Antivirus home edition is only for personal use. If you are running a business you cannot use this antivirus, you will have to buy the professional edition of Avast Antivirus. You can download free antivirus program of Avast antivirus home edition here.

Avast antivirus may be outstanding but it does have its issues. A few users has complained about it being a hog to system resources and that it takes time to scan files although it is much more faster than other traditional anti-viruses. So if you want a much more outstanding antivirus that is definitely much cheaper check out VIPRE® Antivirus + Antispyware. Some of its features are as follows:

High-performance threat protection with low impact on system resources

Scans email for malware threats

Cutting-edge Proactive Protection guards you 24/7

Advanced anti-rootkit technologies

Small, regular definition updates greatly reduce update downloading time

VIPRE has three extra bonus tools: a history cleaner, a secure file eraser, and the PC Explorer for advanced users.

Unfortunately you can’t download free antivirus program of VIPRE® Antivirus + Antispyware, so for personal use I still recommend Avast antivirus. For businesses, this might be an antivirus worth looking into. Click here to check out the VIPRE® antivirus software.

In a lot of ways my wife and I are opposites. She is more sports minded and likes to think more about ping pong tables while I am the ever perpetual bookworm. I like sports but sports never learned to like me. She likes to be with people while I may look outgoing and very sanguine but deep inside I enjoy solitude and the people I enjoy to be with most are only those within my private circle. I am more investment and business minded. My idea of helping people is teaching them how to fish. On the other hand my wife is more philanthropic. I want to build my own “Berkshire Hathaway” while she wants to build a philanthropic foundation.

I am thankful to God that despite our differences, He has managed our individual difference and we have complimented each other.
Months ago, my wife who is a licensed social worker started a children’s ministry within our compound. I am proud of what she and her staff have accomplished. I do not take an active role in this ministry but I support it through the best way I can. Let me tell you a bit about their ministry, which is called the “Train a Child ministry.” The following is a write up about their ministry.

“Train a Child Ministry was put up with an inspiration from a bible passage that says “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it, Proverbs 22:6.” With a mission of a transformative education that enhances emotional, social and intellectual development tailored to a child’s need, the center offers innovative education among children of urban poor families who are unable to send them to formal school. It caters underprivileged children ages three to fifteen in Barangay Dumlog, Talisay City.

Train a Child Ministry was established on August 8, 2009 and has accommodated about thirty five children at the moment.

The center envisions assisting disadvantaged children with free learning service for the advancement of their learning capabilities. We hold Saturday classes and will be opening daily next year. An e-library will also be opened soon. It will be an excellent venue for children to do their school work and other related assignments.

“There is nothing to fear but fear itself.” So said the great President Franklin D. Roosevelt, how true and how timely is what he said even if he said this several decades ago.

Living in the verge of the 21st century, we can’t help it that people have a lot of fears. Fear about the status of the economy and how it is going to affect us personally, fear about war, terror, global warming and fear about everything else. With all that’s happening in the world today, it is no wonder a research reveals that ordinary children are more fearful than psychiatric patients in the 1950s.

In the mix style of comfortable story telling-expository preaching complemented with modern day fictional and non-fictional illustrations and exmaples, Max Lucado one by one discusses the possible fears that each and every one us fast on a day to day basis in his new book, “FEARLESS.” From small personal fears like the fear of not mattering, to fearing the most dreaded things like the fear of global calamity, Lucado shows us that the there is nothing to fear not even fear itself not only because Jesus Christ commands us not to fear but because he is with us in the flames, in life’s most terrible storms and even amidst the calm of deadly silence. He is in control.

Despite the simplicity of the theological truth that we have nothing to be afraid of because Jesus Christ is in the same boat with us, we oftentimes forget such simple truth. I sometimes forget such simple truth. This book has reminded me once again to trust God in everything. There is no need to worry, no need to fear. No need to worry about the past, the present or future. No need to worry about anything else.

Max Lucado has grandiosely presented such simple truth and opened up a treasure trove of what was once I regarded as simple nuggets of wisdom. Certainly, God is in control and he loves me very much and nothing can ever separate me from his love. As the apostle Paul said in Romans chapter 8 the last part “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? . . . For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Because of this affirming fact, I can now re-assure myself that I can live a life without fear, and face my daily existence with an attitude of being FEARLESS.

It’s time for you to face a life without fear. Imagine your life without fear. Imagine a life without face acne and no more need for face moisturizers hehehe. Be fearless ! Fearlessly grab your copy today!

When I was accepted in the Thomas Nelson Book review bloggers program, I’ve decided to pick a children’s book because I enjoy reading a story to my son. So I choose the “Read and Share Todler Bible.”

The book arrived and my son was doubly excited as I am. He flipped opened the book and was amused that the book contains a companion DVD which shows very well in our Samsung HDTV. However he pointed one thing he didn’t like about the DVD, it didn’t contain the last 3 stories of the book which turns out to be his favorite stories, Jesus death and resurrection.

The Read and Share Todler Bible is a great reading material for kids & parents. Each story is less than 7 pages making it short & simple for kids to understand. At the end of each story, an interactive learning suggestion like making a craft or acting out the story is suggested. Kids will love the pictures presented and parents will certainly enjoy reading out the simple exciting actions words used. My son and I enjoyed the read and Share Todder Bible and I know you will too!

I’ve got both good news and bad news about the Chevy Volt. Let’s start with the good news first.

THE GOOD NEWS

General Motor’s has come with a car that lets you save a lot on gasoline ! The car is so efficient that you get 230 miles per gallon out of it on ordinary city driving. Introducing the new Chevy Volt

230 miles per gallon ? You got to be kidding me ! That’s about 368 Kilometers per 3.4 liters or roughly 108 kilometers for every liter of gasoline! But that’s what the new Chevy Volt, General Motor’s (GM) new electric car promises to deliver to customers. In Kilowatt hour, the Chevy volt will use 25 kilowatt hours per every 100 miles driven.

Powered by a lithium-ion battery, you can drive the Chevy volt up to around 40 miles after which you can plug it in an ordinary outlet to recharge. For longer driving the Chevy Volt uses a small gas-powered engine.

The Chevy Volt is perhaps GM’s renewed effort to catch up with the market. The Chevy Volt could indeed deliver a boost to GM’s sales and certainly boost GM’s environment friendly image.

Wow ! The Chevy Volt is certainly good news for consumers, GM stake holders and of course the environment.

THE BAD NEWS

Well for starters the domestic launching for the Chevy Volt (That is in the U.S) is still in 2010 (And when would this arrive in the Philippines, after a decade ? heheheh) The price tag is about $40,000.00. (Almost 2 million Philippine pesos) And the worst of all the bad news ? Well the Philippines has one of the highest cost of electricity in Asia. Driving your Chevy Volt here might save you a lot on gasoline and heck you might even save the environment. But you might end up paying more for electricity than you usually do. You’d probably end up saving more if you wil ljust walk ! You could perhaps loose some weight too. (However an exercise equipment would be more appropriate for this hehehe) So lemme out of here and let me drive my Suzuki Alto !

Traditional weight loss theories tell us that we either do something positive or negative in order to loose weight. To do something positive could probably mean exercising, having a more active lifestyle, drinking some kind of weight loose pill or getting surgery. Doing something negative may involve calorie counting, limiting food intake, going into a diet etc. etc.

But what about doing something that is neither positive nor negative? What about doing nothing at all? Enter a new paradigm in weight loss, loosing weight by sleeping well.

Study shows that sleep deprived individuals are more likely to be obese. I am neither a medical doctor nor a scientist, and it is best to first consult your doctor about this. However doing some online research, I found that such new thinking has a scientific basis.

In order to understand this more simply let me introduce to you two hormones in our bodies known as Leptin and Ghrelin.

Leptin regulates the appetite, metabolism and calorie burning. It tells your brain that you are already full. It is also responsible in telling your body when it should start burning calories and when it should create energy so that your body could use such. When you sleep, the level of Leptin increases and tells your brain that your body has sufficient energy and that there is not need for you to feel hungry or that you need to burn up calories. Lack of sleep causes your Leptin level to decrease. This in turns makes your brain think that you lack energy. To compensate for this, your brain tells you that you are hungry when in reality you don’t need to eat. Decrease in Leptin levels also tells your body to store the calories you just ate as fat as reserve energy next time you need it. In short decrease in Leptin levels results to feeling hungry and also has the effect of slowing down your metabolism.

On the other hand Ghrelin is the exact opposite of Leptin. Ghrelin tells your body when to eat, when to stop burning calories and when to store energy as fat. When you sleep the level of Ghrelin in your body decreases. Lack of sleep causes Ghrelin levels to increase and the body ends up thinking that it is hungry and that it needs more calories. Another effect is that the body stops burning calories because it thinks it lacks such.

It is recommended that you get at least 7 to 9 hours of restful sleep a day to properly balance your body hormones. What is important is not only the quantity of hours that you sleep but the quality of your sleep. You need to have a proper restful sleep. In order to get this you might want to check out Stemulite, a break through, all natural formula that induces deep REM sleep which leads to increased muscle endurance, increased weight and fat loss and gives you more energy.

I bought my Suzuki Alto sometime this year and I love the little thing!

My wife tells me that the Suzuki Alto is so small that it will turn turtle when it reaches hi-speed and gets side sweeped when passed by a big truck. Her personal preference is a bigger car, more specifically a pick up such as the Mitsubishi Estrada.

God forbid that such unfortunate thing happens to me! Despite my wife’s criticism of the Suzuki Alto, I still love driving it around.

I’ve always loved small cars; in the auto industry they call such cars as “compact cars.” The reason why I love small cars is that they are easy to park, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to operate, cheap and affordable.

Not all compact cars possess all of this quality though. For example, the Suzuki Swift which belongs to the compact car category which happens to be my first car is quite expensive, although I love the Swift’s form factor which is much nicer than the Suzuki Alto.

If I were to have it my way, I would love to own a mini-cooper, the one used in the movie “The Italian Job.” (Not the one Mr. Bean drives around ) So far I have only seen one in Cebu City. However the Cooper is so expensive, so I have to go for the cheaper alternative.

Anyway, I bought my Suzuki Alto for P 420,000.00+. This is the Deluxe Edition. The standard Edition cost about P 380,000.00. The only difference between both editions is that, in the deluxe edition you get side moldings which make the car looks nicer. It also has power steering and power windows (Front doors only) Both the Suzuki Alto deluxe edition and standard edition has manual transmission.

Lately, I heard that there is a cheap sub-compact car from China which sells for only P 320,000.00. One with automatic transmission cost about the same price as the Suzuki Alto Deluxe Edition. Price wise, it may sound great but I guess I’m better of sticking with the Suzuki Alto, after all the Alto engine is made in Japan and I would bet my money any day over an engine with all its bearings made in Japan compared to one made in China.

The Suzuki Alto claims that its gasoline consumption is about 1 liter per 20 kilometers. I have not really tested if this is true. But so far I am very satisfied with its performance. I drive about 27 kilometers almost everyday back and forth from Cebu City to our house in Talisay City. Add to that several kilometers for city driving and sometimes extra kilometers for driving outside Metro Cebu from time to time. Yet on the average, I only consume less than P 3,000.00 per month in Gasoline! Talk about savings! Take note that the Suzuki Alto was awarded as the most full effecient car by the Philippine Department of energy. (Their test shows the Suzuki Alto consuming only 1 litter per 35 kilometers)

This is not a paid review, yet I am writing about this because I am truly satisfied with the Suzuki Alto’s performance. (However I am optimizing for the keyword Suzuki Alto here. If you are into guerilla blogging, you probably know what I mean

So far I have no complaints about my Suzuki Alto, except that it is really small and that people sitting at the back might get cramps if you take it out for long drives. Future designer of the Suzuki Alto might consider enlarging a little bit the space between seats.

Performance wise, the Suzuki Alto has almost all the luxuries of a standard vehicle such as really nice air-conditioning and a CD-Radio that may not sound like your home theater but does what its suppose to do.

So for those of you out there who want a nice compact car go for the Suzuki Alto!
