In the Philippines we celebrate father’s day on the 3rd Sunday of June just like in the United States and in most countries. So on Sunday, June 15, 2008 we will be celebrating Father’s day.
According to Wikipedia, the first modern Father’s day celebration started in the United States on July 5, 1908, at Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church.
Ms. Grace Golden Clayton, is believed to be the first to suggest such service to his pastor in honor of the fathers that died in a deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December.
Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd is considered as another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day. She is the daughter of war veteran William Jackson Smart. Her father raised her and her six siblings as a single parent. Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s efforts to establish Mother’s Day. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA, at the Spokane YMCA.
After such, there became widespread support for a national Father’s day celebration. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. However it was President Richard Nixon that declared the holiday to be officially recognized in 1972.
